Hammersmith borders Shepherds Bush, Chiswick, Kensington and Fulham. The district is situated on the north bank of the Thames, within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Hammersmith Bridge connects the area to Barnes in southwest direction.

Hammersmith is located at the junction of a number of local feeder roads and the A4 arterial route. This location has enabled it to become a major employment and commercial centre. King Street is the main shopping venue, with a shopping centre, a number of smaller shops and other notable landmarks, such as the Lyric Theatre and Town Hall. One of the most popular entertainment venues in the area is the Eventim Apollo (former Hammersmith Odeon). This is a grade II listed building that serves as concern and event venue. The popularity of the venue is represented by the large number of concerts held there every year.

Two stations on the London Underground serve the centre of the district, both named Hammersmith. One is on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines, while the other is on the District and Piccadilly lines. Some of the shops on the westernmost side of King Street are closer to Ravenscourt Park tube station, served by the District line.
