Walk Through the Charming Chiswick, W4
The district of Chiswick is mostly located in the London Borough of Hounslow, with some areas, such as Acton Green, Chiswick Park tube station and Bedford Park in the London Borough of Ealing. Chiswick’s location of a meander of the Thames has established traditions with river sports, recreational and competitive rowing.
The geography of the district features built-up areas in the north part and open spaces in the south. Most notable parks of the area include Bedford Park, largely designed by Norman Shaw, Turnham Green, where a number of remarkable mansion blocks are present and Strand on the Green, which was a fishing hamlet till late 18th century.
Chiswick House is one of the more notable landmarks in the district. What makes this building so well-known is the fact that it is among the finest examples of Palladian architecture in the country. It features a highly-valued collection of paintings and furniture. The surrounding grounds of Chiswick House are among the first English gardens.
Chiswick is home to Fuller’s Brewery, founded in 1845. This is the oldest and also the largest brewery in London. The brewery is renowned for the award-winning London Pride beer and Chiswick Bitter ale.
St Nicholas Church is one of the notable churches in the area, with a tower that dates back to the 15th century. Notable features of the church are the mausoleum of Philip James de Loutherbourg and Josiah Wedgwood’s tomb.
There are London Underground stations in the area: Gunnersbury, Turnham Green and Chiswick Park; all of them are on the District line. The London Overground is served by South Acton and Gunnersbury stations.
